The Fine Structure of Mosquito Midgut Muscle
نویسندگان
چکیده
The midguts and associated muscle fibers of A. quadrimaculatus were dissected out in saline solution and immediately fixed in a solution of 1 % osmium tetroxide in 0.1 M potassium phosphate buffer, pH 7.2, for 5 min at room temperature. The specimens were subsequently dehydrated in ethyl alcohol for 2 hr and embedded in Epon 812 (Luft, 1961). Sections were cut on an LKB ultra microtome with glass knivesAfter mounting on Formvar film, we stained the sections with uranyl acetate (Watson, 1958) and/or with lead hydroxide (Millonig, 1961). Subsequent to the staining, the sections were covered with carbon. Micrographs were taken with a Siemens Elmiskop I.

Midgut of the non-hematophagous mosquito Toxorhynchites theobaldi (Diptera, Culicidae)
In most mosquito species, the females require a blood-feeding for complete egg development. However, in Toxorhynchites mosquitoes, the eggs develop without blood-feeding, and both females and males exclusively feed on sugary diets. The midgut is a well-understood organ in blood-feeding mosquitoes, but little is known about it in non-blood-feeding ones. In the present study, the detailed morphol...
متن کاملCell biological analysis of mosquito midgut invasion: the defensive role of the actin-based ookinete hood
Successful completion of the Plasmodium lifecycle in the mosquito vector is critical for malaria transmission. It has been documented that the fate of Plasmodium in the mosquito ultimately depends on a fine interplay of molecular mosquito factors that act as parasite agonists and antagonists. Here we investigate whether the cellular responses of the invaded midgut epithelium can also determine ...
متن کاملAnopheles Midgut Epithelium Evades Human Complement Activity by Capturing Factor H from the Blood Meal
Hematophagous vectors strictly require ingesting blood from their hosts to complete their life cycles. Exposure of the alimentary canal of these vectors to the host immune effectors necessitates efficient counteractive measures by hematophagous vectors. The Anopheles mosquito transmitting the malaria parasite is an example of hematophagous vectors that within seconds can ingest human blood doub...
متن کاملEvidence for arbovirus dissemination conduits from the mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) midgut.
The mechanism by which arboviruses bypass the basal lamina of mosquito midgut cells and enter the body cavity has been unclear. Experiments using Venezuelan equine encephalitis viral replicon particles, which express the green fluorescent protein gene in cells, indicate the operation of tissue conduits, possibly involving tracheae and visceral muscles, that facilitate virus movement through the...
متن کاملDifferentiation of Nuclear and Cytoplasmic Fine Structure during Sporogonic Development of Plasmodium Berghei
The value of protozoa in investigations of nucleocytoplasmic relationships has long been appreciated, as indicated by reviews (1, 3, 7) of the extensive literature on this subject. Though the malarial parasite apparently has not previously been employed in such studies, we have found it to be a potentially useful organism in this regard. The elaborate differentiation that the parasite undergoes...
